AF_XDP support is a recent technology introduced that aims at improving
capture performance. With this update, Suricata now provides a new
capture source 'af-xdp' that attaches an eBPF program to the network
interface card. Packets received in the NIC queue are forwarded to
a RX ring in user-space, bypassing the Linux network stack.
Note, there is a configuration option (force-xdp-mode) that forces the
packet through the normal Linux network stack.
libxdp and libbpf is required for this feature and is compile time
configured.
This capture source operates on single and multi-queue NIC's via
suricata.yaml. Here, various features can be enabled, disabled
or edited as required by the use case.
This feature currently only supports receiving packets via AF_XDP,
no TX support has been developed.

Register a new runmode - DPDK. This enables a new flag on Suricata start
(--dpdk).
With the flag given, DPDK runmode is enabled.
Runmode loads the configuration and then initializes EAL.
If successful, it configures the physical NICs according to the configuration
file. After that, worker threads are initialized and then are in continuous
receive loop.
Allow a plugin to register itself as a capture source. This isn't that
much different than how current sources register, it just happens
a little later on during startup.
One "slot" is reserved for capture plugins, but multiple plugins
implementing a capture can be loaded. The --capture-plugin command
line option must be used to tell Suricata which plugin
to use.
This is still very much a work in progress, but can load
PF_RING as a capture plugin.
Enables IPS functionality on Windows using the open-source
(LGPLv3/GPLv2) WinDivert driver and API.
From https://www.reqrypt.org/windivert-doc.html : "WinDivert is a
user-mode capture/sniffing/modification/blocking/re-injection package
for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
WinDivert can be used to implement user-mode packet filters, packet
sniffers, firewalls, NAT, VPNs, tunneling applications, etc., without
the need to write kernel-mode code."
- adds `--windivert [filter string]` and `--windivert-forward [filter
string]` command-line options to enable WinDivert IPS mode.
`--windivert[-forward] true` will open a filter for all traffic. See
https://www.reqrypt.org/windivert-doc.html#filter_language for more
information.
Limitation: currently limited to `autofp` runmode.
Additionally:
- `tmm_modules` now zeroed during `RegisterAllModules`
- fixed Windows Vista+ `inet_ntop` call in `PrintInet`
- fixed `GetRandom` bug (nonexistent keys) on fresh Windows installs
- fixed `RandomGetClock` building on Windows builds
- Added WMI queries for MTU
This patch implements bypass capability for af-packet.
The filter only bypass TCP and UDP in IPv4 and IPv6. It don't
don't bypass IPv6 with extended headers.
This patch also introduces a bypassed flow manager that takes
care of timeouting the bypassed flows. It uses a 60 sec
timeout on flow. As they are supposed to be active we can
try that. If they are not active then we don't care to get them
back in Suricata.
Introduces a new thread module, TMM_LOGGER, which is the
root most logger.
Only handles loggers in the packet path, stats and flow
logging are not included.
The loggers are made up of a hierarchy of loggers. At the top we
have the root logger which is the main entry point to
logging. Under the root there exists parent loggers that are the
entry point for specific types of loggers such as packet logger,
transaction loggers, etc. Each parent logger may have 0 or more
loggers that actual handle the job of producing output to something
like a file.
Initial version of the 'FlowWorker' thread module. This module
combines Flow handling, TCP handling, App layer handling and
Detection in a single module. It does all flow related processing
under a single flow lock.
To speed up startup with many tenants, tenant loading will be parallelized.
As no tempary threads should be used for these memory allocation heavy
tasks, this patch adds new type of 'command' thread that can be used to
load and reload tenants.
This patch hardcodes the number of loaders to 4. Future work will make it
dynamic.
The loader thread essentially sleeps constantly. When a tasks is sent to
it, it will wake up and execute it.
An design error was made when doing the TLS storage module which
has been made dependant of the TLS logging. At the time there was
only one TLS logging module but there is now two different ones.
By putting the TLS store module in a separate module, we can now
use EVE output and TLS store at the same time.
Convert regular 'stats.log' output to this new API.
In addition to the current stats value, also give the last value. This
makes it easy to display the difference.
This patch adds a new Log API for streaming data such as TCP reassembled
data and HTTP body data. It could also replace Filedata API.
Each time a new chunk of data is available, the callback will be called.
Use new management API to run the flow manager.
Support multiple flow managers, where each of them works with it's
own part of the flow hash.
Make number of threads configurable:
flow:
memcap: 64mb
hash-size: 65536
prealloc: 10000
emergency-recovery: 30
managers: 2
This sets up 2 flow managers.
Handle misc tasks only in instance 1: Handle defrag hash timeout
handing, host hash timeout handling and flow spare queue updating
only from the first instance.
